Mode for

This is a blog about all things brass!
We have a fabulous publishing house with catalogues full of music for brass musicians, ensemble and bands and we want to promote brass music and get it heard, so we supply musicians and bands for private, public, corporate and sporting events.
In 2011 we are the official supplier of bands for the RFL 4 Nations Tournament, Super League Grand Final, York Racecourse and QIPCO British Champions Series at Ascot!

QIPCO at Ascot

Thought you might like a few piccies from Ascot.
Me with ex-champion racehorse Monsignor and the old boy with Friary Guildford Band!

Time to blog again!

Well, it's been such a long time since I wrote something I really should make the effort!
A quick update of where we are up to today; Aside from being bugged by the office cats as we work, we are deeply into organising and managing all the bands and pre-match anthems for the Gillette 4 Nations Rugby League Tournament.
It's a fantastic opportunity for bands to perform in fabulous venues and be heard by millions so we're delighted to bring on board Rainford Band, EYMS, Wrexham Brass, Friary Guildford and our own Ottoni Brass.
Ottoni performed superbly at the Super League Grand Final last week at Old Trafford whilst, last Saturday we supplied Friary Guildford to entertain the crowds at the QIPCO British Champion Series Race Day at Ascot.
They did an awesome job and Mode for, gave excellent service with glowing reviews such as this from James Oldring, the Operations and Events Director at the British Champions Series: "I wanted to get in touch with you to thank you for your professionalism and fantastic service...to find me exactly what I was looking for within 36 hours of being asked, and delivering it under budget was fantastic, and a huge help to me. There is no doubt as to who I will be contacting when I need a similar service again."
As I write, Simon's busy completing the anthems and a new commissioned medley of 4 Nations related tunes for the Gillette 4 Nations and on top of all this we've got a healthy flow of orders, some inspiring teaching and all our rehearsals.
It's a busy old life, but it's time to get on the writing band wagon and start publishing a few things about the brass music world, so why not join in the brass debate!

Live from Linz!

Well the coverage provided courtesy of British Bandsman and Yamaha Neo is unquestionably a great event for those unable to be in Linz and for the first time we can have un-biased coverage on the event.

The first night has led to some wonderful performances of Thomas Doss' set test-piece but who were your favourites? Black Dyke were unquestionably top drawer with Cory providing a tremendous performance but I have to say Eikanger and Oberosterreich gave real thills of performances.

So, why not share your thoughts with us here?

Good music or media hype?

The other day I went to a rehearsal with a fab bunch of brass players in the North East to get my practice time in before a trip to France in June and on arrival (albeit 10 minutes late because someone puts the 90 mile journey on elastic!) it was time to play a piece of music by a much hyped brass band composer!
The piece was Horizons by Paul Lovatt-Cooper. Of course, the sounds are harmless enough, it keeps the crowd pleased apparently, but in honesty I found it rather dull and just variations on other snippets of tunes put together in a rather unstructured fashion and also rather similar to the other pieces by him I have played or listened to.
Now, as a musician that's my opinion and I'm certainly not knocking someone for bringing enjoyment to the field and doing well out of it on the way; the bands seem to enjoy playing it and the audience enjoys hearing it so those boxes are ticked, but how does this writing of only average quality fair so much better compared to the genius of some of our other current and past composers? Is it purely down to the media hype surrounding the sensation of someone popularised by a top band, or because actually people believe it really is quality writing?
What's your views, why not have your say here.
